DS-2 Chronograph Automatic: From Generation to Generation

 

The new chronograph from Certina is inspired by a timepiece that was – quite literally – at the height of its time. The predecessor of the DS-2 Chronograph Automatic proved its qualities during a spectacular expedition on Mount Everest. The new model carries this spirit of adventure into the 21st century, with a sporty-elegant vintage design and silicon technology. The DS-2 Chronolympic was the epitome of resilience and reliable precision. In 1970, it caused a particular sensation: five models accompanied a Japanese expedition team to the highest peak on Earth. But that was not all. During the descent, the watch on Yuichiro Miura's wrist raced down the mountain on skis for 2,000 meters – at speeds of up to 160 km/h. The daring adventure was immortalized in a documentary that won an Oscar: "The Man Who Skied Down Everest."

 A worthy successor: the new DS-2 Chronograph AutomaticThe new DS-2 does not shy away from comparison with its famous predecessor. Its tonneau-shaped case (43.3 mm x 40.5 mm) made of stainless steel with a gold-colored PVD coating is directly inspired by the model from the 1970s. The dial features a small second at 9 o'clock, a 30-minute counter at 3 o'clock, a date window at 6 o'clock, and a tachymeter scale. Gold-colored indices and hands with Super-LumiNova® coating complete the contrasting retro design. The watch is worn on a brown calfskin strap with crocodile embossing, or alternatively, a stainless steel model is available, whose dark blue dial brings color into play with white, yellow, and red elements.

 Future-Oriented Mechanics: Automatic Movement and Silicon Balance SpringInside the watch, a movement ticks that combines mechanical tradition with the latest technologies. The automatic caliber features a contemporary power reserve of 68 hours as well as a balance spring made of silicon. This innovative high-tech material is not only antimagnetic and lightweight but also corrosion-resistant and temperature-stable. As a result, the movement delivers consistent precision and long-term reliability – for the generation of tomorrow.
