When Seiko's founder, Kintaro Hattori, was born in central Tokyo in 1860, Japan was undergoing massive social and industrial changes as the country reopened to the world after more than two centuries of self-imposed isolation. It was a time of unlimited opportunity and few understood the implications of this change better than Kintaro Hattori. At the age of just 17 he opened a watch repair shop at home and only four years later he founded his own company repairing, importing and selling large clocks and wristwatches.
In 2012, Seiko demonstrated its leadership in manufacturing high-tech watches with the world's first GPS solar watch. With just a push of a button, the Astron connects to the GPS network and sets the correct local time in each time zone*, since all the necessary energy is supplied solely by light, a battery change is never necessary. It shows the local time with the precision of an atomic clock, wherever you are on earth. Today, eight years later, the latest generation of Astron GPS solar technology powers the new Kintaro Hattori 160th Anniversary watch and joins a long list of horological innovations.
The case and bracelet are titanium with a black hard coat finish . The bezel is made of zirconium ceramic and has sixteen facets—one for each decade since Kintaro's birth. With its jet black coloring, gold-tone accents and high-gloss bezel, the watch has an impressive presence on the wrist that lives up to its heritage.
The watch is offered in a special gift box that includes a plaque with the “S” hallmark and a card with a message from Kintaro's great-grandson and current company Chairman & CEO, Shinji Hattori. The caseback bears Kintaro's name and three reminders of his legacy: The "S" trademark, which he registered in 1900, is placed in the center of the caseback. Above it is his motto, "One step ahead of the rest," and the Seiko name, first used in 1924, is featured prominently on the outer rim.
